Rope (1948)

Rope (1948)

Rope is a timeless film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, based up on the crimes of Nathan Leopold jr. and Alfred Loeb, in which two young upperclass men murdered Robert Franks in attempt to create the "perfect crime". Through out the film, the audience is subject to constant dramatic irony as at the beginning of the film we see the main characters Phillip(Dick Hogan) and Brandon (John Dall) murder their victim by strangulation using a piece of rope, hense the film title, and stuff him into a crate which they host a dinner party off of. Each time other characters in film are near the crate the audience feel a sense of tension coming from the murderers who are trying to gain a thrill from their actions.

The film Rope is a good example of a thriller, because we are instantly introduced to suspense, from the opening scene until the very last scene. The family of David Bently have attended the dinner party in which they are eating from the crate that his dead body lays, oblivious. But Davids absence is noticed, and his family begin to ask questions of his where abouts. Brandon invited the family of David for self contentment, so that he was comfortable with believing in himself that he is a genius and that he was capable of committing the perfect crime.
The whole murder is masterminded by Brandon, whilst Phillip is more apprehensive and paranoid about getting caught. we see this because on multiple occasions we see him almost give away what they had, but for Brandon to keep his mouth closed.
The whole film has around 10 cuts, and each scene lasting for around 10 minutes without a single cut, but for invisble transitions. These transitions will usually feature colour matching for example the camera may dip to someone black coat, and then revert to a piece of cloth.
